What Is the Training Visa (Subclass 407)?

The Subclass 407 visa is for individuals participating in workplace-based training that enhances occupational skills, meets professional requirements, or supports capacity building.

Important:

This is NOT a work visa—it’s for structured training only

You must be nominated by an approved Australian organization

Training must be supervised and professionally relevant

Available to apply from inside or outside Australia

Who Can Apply?

Eligibility Requirements:

Be 18 years or older

Nominated by an approved sponsor

Approved training plan in place

Meet health and character requirements

Hold adequate health insurance

Demonstrate functional English (IELTS 4.5 overall or equivalent)

Work Experience Required:

At least 12 months full-time experience (or equivalent)

Experience must be within the 24 months before nomination

Experience from employment, training, or combination of both

English Exemption:

Completed 2+ years full-time study towards diploma or trade qualification

Types of Training Covered Under the 407 Visa

The Training Visa supports three main categories of occupational training:

Registration or Licensing Training

Mandatory training for professional registration

Required for licensing in Australia or overseas

Skills Enhancement Training

Workplace training in a nominated skilled occupation

Must be relevant to your background

Occupation must be on eligible skilled list

Training Visa Duration & Work Conditions

Duration:

Up to 2 years maximum

Based on approved training program length

Work Conditions:

Primary applicant: Only work related to approved training

Dependents: Work up to 40 hours per fortnight

What You CANNOT Do:

Work outside approved training program

Use as pathway to permanent residency

Undertake unrelated formal education

Be sponsored by individuals or sole traders

Sponsorship Requirements

Your Sponsor Must:

Be an approved Australian organization

Provide a detailed training plan

Outline program structure and supervision

Demonstrate clear training objectives

Note: Individuals and sole traders cannot sponsor 407 visa applicants.
